Conditions Treated with Functional Medicine in our Clinic

Functional medicine focusses on individualized health recommendations, finding the root cause of illness and encompassing the whole body in its approach to treatment. Each patient undergoes a full physical/ lifestyle assessment and has a custom treatment plan prepared. Appointments are longer in duration to address all concerns appropriately. This is the foundation of the approach used in Integrated Functional Medicine / Concession integrative Health.

Insomnia

Sleeplessness is a common ailment and can be detrimental to our health and overall wellbeing. This may include the inability to fall or stay asleep, waking up multiple times during the night, or waking up early in the morning. There are a variety of testing available that could assist with this assessment of this issue including neurotransmitter testing, hormonal analysis as well as determining if there is a medical cause for this complaint through bloodwork. A determination of lifestyle factors that could contribute to insomnia also would be reviewed as well as the mental health component.

Resistance Weight Loss

Often eating a healthy diet and exercising can lead to weight loss, but for some people, these changes may have only a minor effect on weight loss. Weight loss resistance can occur due to hormonal changes, thyroid disorders, steroidal medications for anti-inflammation, or growths on the pituitary gland. Hypothyroidism can lead to weight loss resistance because a lack of thyroid hormone leads to a slower metabolism. In women, increased estrogen may cause the body to hold onto body fat because fat contains estrogen. In men, increased estrogen can suppress testosterone, which leads to increased body fat because testosterone speeds up metabolism and fuels muscle growth.

Steroidal medications and pituitary growths can also disrupt hormone balance and lead to weight loss resistance. Overall, balancing hormones can lead to weight loss allowing patients achieve to their weight loss goals. A review of lifestyle factors and overall health is necessary to assist with losing weight.

Hormonal Imbalances

Hormones are chemical messengers that carry signals from one part of the body to another, and they work to control almost all primary physiological processes in the body, such as reproduction, sexual function, digestion, metabolism, growth, and energy and heat regulation. When hormones become deficient or imbalanced, many things can occur in the body, such as mood changes, night sweats, hot flashes, low libido, infertility, reduced sexual function, hair loss, wrinkling skin, and weight gain. Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome

This syndrome is often characterized by a feeling of mental and emotional fatigue that disrupts daily functioning and is caused by chronic stress.  When chronic stress occurs are body produces cortisol which becomes depleted overtime and cause hormonal imbalance.  Some symptoms that could indicate adrenal fatigue include feeling burned out, insomnia, salty or sweet cravings, difficulty getting out of bed, intolerance to stress, night sweats, and feeling more awake after 6pm.

Autoimmune Issues

Multiple Sclerosis, Crohn's Disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, can be addressed taking a multifactorial approach. A variety of treating vitamin and mineral deficiencies, as well as imbalances in the body can impact the ability to successfully treat these issues. Our clinic offers specialized therapies that can facilitate improvement and possibly remission.

Headaches

Headaches are a common issue among both men and women, and can be addressed successfully by determining type, frequency and duration of the symptom. A full health assessment is needed to determine the cause and a variety of treatment options are available to assist in prevention or the treatment of headaches or migraines.

Mood Swings

Many people suffer from mood swings for different reasons, and both men and women can receive hormone related mood changes. Women going through menopause or perimenopause often suffer from increased anxiety, depression, sadness or irritability. In men, male hormonal fluctuations can lead to increased aggression, anger, apathy, or depression. Balancing hormones can improve moods and improve wellbeing.

Premature Aging

High amounts of stress, alcohol, drugs, lack of exercise, poor diet, and smoking can cause a person to age prematurely. The body ages at a different rate for each person, some people show signs of aging more quickly than others. Taking steps to reverse or eliminate the signs of aging may help to slow premature aging. Our clinic offers many options to assist with maintaining youthfulness.

Allergies

Allergic reactions are a response that the immune system has when a foreign substance attempts to enter into the body; however, hormone imbalances or adrenal gland deficiencies may also lead to an increased sensitivity in allergic reactions. Certain hormones, such as DHEA and cortisol, which is a hormone that is released during stress to counteract inflammation, helps to reduce allergies and inflammation in the body. When these hormones are deficient; people can experience increased sensitivity to foreign substances.

Mental Health Concerns

Our clinic offers a variety of services for clients with psychiatric or mental health concerns custom to the individual. By taking a multifaceted approach to the patient using therapy, lifestyle recommendations, ensuring there is not a medical/ hormonal cause of the concern, and natural supplements can facilitate improvement without the use of psychotropic medications and unwanted side effects. Neurotransmitter testing also may assist in determining what is deficient or in excess in the brain and allow for increased success for natural supplementation.
